A construction worker died Monday after what appears to be a work accident in Chantilly.
Loudoun County deputies responded Monday afternoon to the 42300 block of Braddock Road, where workers were reportedly digging footers for athletic fields at the new Paul VI High School.
The deceased has been identified as 34-year-old Feliciano Lopez of Chantilly.
Authorities say Lopez fell into one of the holes, and then a second worker fell into the hole as he was trying to rescue Lopez.
While the second worker was not seriously injured, Lopez was extricated by rescue personnel and pronounced dead on scene.
The circumstances surrounding the death remain under investigation, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office.
Clarification: An earlier version of this story stated the workers were digging footing for lighting. That information was provided by the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office. A lighting contractor said the footers were not for lighting, but for other poles. The Times-Mirror has reached out to the general contractor for clarity on the issue.
