Carolyn Grace Woodland

Carolyn Grace Woodland, 66, left her earthly body on January 5, 2020, at Blue Ridge Hospice in Winchester, Virginia, with family by her side. Carolyn was born in November of 1953 in Washing-ton, D.C., the third child of Alford and Charlotte Taylor. She was raised in a busy household of seven children in Arlington, Virginia, and remained close to her siblings throughout her life. Carolyn followed an early passion for nursing and completed Washington Hospital Center’s School of Nursing program in 1975. She married her high school sweetheart, Lawrence (Larry) Woodland in September of 1976, and they set off to enjoy outdoor adventures in Colorado, where Carolyn worked in pediatrics. Returning to Virginia after deciding to have children, Larry and Carolyn settled in Lovettsville, where they lovingly raised Vivian, Lauren, and Carl. Carolyn continued working as a registered nurse on the pediatric floor and later with the home health care service of Frederick Memorial Hospital. Even in retirement, she remained “on call” to answer medical questions from friends and family. Carolyn continued her life of service whenever her health allowed, vol-unteering as a driver to help others get to medical appointments and navigate the health care system. Her Catholic faith, always a strong foundation, became central to her life over her last decade. Carolyn joined and led prayer groups at St. Francis de Sales Parish in Purcellville, participated in a monthly Padre Pio Cenacle, and was nourished by her proximity to the grotto at Mount St. Mary’s and Shrine of St. Elizabeth Seton in Emmitsburg, MD. Motherhood was so important to Carolyn, and she found a particular connection to the Mother Mary. Carolyn also enjoyed singing, photographing flowers and family members, hosting gatherings, and watching the wildlife out her kitchen window. Carolyn was predeceased by her parents; her sister, Mary Patricia Harman; her son, Carl Woodland; and her grandson, Noah Woodland. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Lawrence Woodland of Lovettsville, VA; her daughter, Vivian Woodland (Francesca Bourgault) and grandaughter, Evelyn Bourland of Brattleboro, VT; her daughter Lauren (Andrew) Reames and grand-son, Miles Reames of White Post, VA; her brother, Alford Taylor (Christine Manor) of Rockville, MD; her sister, Susan Lewis of Front Royal, VA; her brother, George Doherty (Rodolfo Gomez) of Arlington, VA; her brother, Paul Taylor of Raleigh, NC; her sister, Alma Taylor-Smyth (Stacy Smyth) of Seattle, WA; and many loved siblings-in-law, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and cherished friends. A Catholic funeral Mass for Carolyn was held on January 10 at St. Francis de Sales in Purcellville, and she was buried in Lovettsville Union Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to Doctors Without Borders, P.O. Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD 21741, or to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St.#405, Winchester, VA 22601.
