Joseph Theodore Gooding, jr., of Pinehurst, North Carolina, passed away in his home, due to cancer complications, on Wednesday, February 17 in the year of our Lord, 2021. He was surrounded by those that dearly loved him.
Ted, also called JT by his friends and Pop by his family, was born on July 17, 1936, at Georgetown University Hospital, in Washington DC. His father was Joseph T. Gooding, sr. and his mother was Margaret Evelyn. He was the oldest of 4 brothers, Ron, Rick, and Dennis. Raised in Kensington, MD, Ted went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps. He was also a member of the DC Dragons and raced at Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas, VA.
After marrying his beloved wife, Victoria Jean, they settled to raise a family in Sterling Park, VA. Ted and his recently passed brother Ron were the founders of Enclosures Unlimited, Inc. Their dedication, hard work, and honest business ethics were the cornerstone in making this company what it still is today. Ted also played a pivotal role in the development and construction of Bill Allen Field. He rode his horse from Church Road to the field to watch his son Paul play football. A few decades later, and on several occasions, Ted would be politely asked to leave his two grandsons’ games.
Ted enjoyed hunting, shooting, horseback riding, fishing, playing poker, and golf. He was a hard-core Washington Redskins fan (back in the RFK stadium days) and loved his family and country. In his later years, Ted enjoyed gardening, knife collecting, Tuesday and Thursday dinner dates with family (“Don’t burn the pizza and be sure to make the steaks medium rare”). He loved going to the movies every Friday with his favorite son-in-law, no matter what picture was playing. He was also quite the Spider Solitaire aficionado and a superb storyteller.
This wonderful, strong, and love-filled man is survived by his wife Jean; his children Paul Alan Gooding, Vicki Lynn Mayer (& husband Terry), Timothy Scott Gooding, and Steve Gooding (deceased); his grandchildren Douglas Joseph Mayer (and wife Tyler), Cody Wayne Mayer (& wife Katie), Michael Mayer (& wife Rosanna), April Mayer (& husband Matt), Shannon Day (& husband Martin), Jeff Munsey (& wife Rachel); great-grandchildren Harmony Grace, Noah, Ta’Shaya Nelina, Adelynn, baby Rex, Riley, and Landon.
There will be no public visitation nor service. Instead, the family has chosen to gather for a celebration of Ted’s life, on his next birthday, in July, where they hope to play some of the games he enjoyed and to eat nutty buddy ice cream & prime rib (his favorites). Please keep his memory, his family, and his loved ones in prayer. And remember to do what Pop always advised: “Make sure you behave yourself and don’t take any wooden nickels.”
