Peter John Haley

Peter John Haley, beloved father, uncle, brother, mentor, and friend, passed away peacefully at Heritage Hall in Leesburg, Virginia on the evening of June 24th at the age of 93. Peter was a World War II veteran and longtime editor for the National Archives. He was a resident of Mt. Gilead for 68 years and the members of that close-knit community will miss his wealth of knowledge and stories about the old days “on the mountain”. A self-taught student of ancient Greek and the modern European languages, he was also a lover of poetry, drama, opera and classic movies and he never tired of sharing his extensive knowledge of those things with his friends and family, and we never got tired of learning from him. Peter Haley is predeceased by his wife, Virginia, his sister Caroline Lott and survived by his sister, Joni Drew; his son, Christopher and daughter-in-law, Helena; nephew John Dugger and niece Stephanie Colburn, both of whom Peter and Virginia raised as their own; Stephanie’s husband, Rob; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
