Shirley Louise Gardner

Shirley Gardner went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday December 7th, 2021, after a long life of working hard, serving the Lord, having a good sense of humor and helping others.

She was born in Loudoun County and raised on a dairy farm in Ashburn, VA, with her eleven brothers and sisters. Shirley was saved at a young age at Calvary Baptist Church in Ashburn, Va. She worked at Thompson’s Dairy in Washington D.C. as a young adult where she took her nieces, Janice and Linda, on many activities. Shirley married Keith Gardner in 1954. They lived on Belmont Ridge Road in Waxpool, Va, where they served the Lord together at Mount Hope Baptist Church.

Her life verse was Romans 8:28 “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” She had great faith in her Lord that He would be faithful in every event of her life even in those last days before she went home to heaven. Keith and Shirley had three boys: Brian Keith, Drew Keith and Gregory Scott. Brian lived three days in the hospital before he died with spinal meningitis. The Lord gave Shirley a calm and peaceful heart during this tragic loss. Her calm spirit helped another mother come to know the Lord during the loss of her child at the same time.

Shirley was a homemaker and teachers aid at Aldie elementary school. She raised her two sons, Drew and Greg, as the Bible says, in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Shirley was a Sunday school teacher, children’s church worker, worked with the missionary women’s union and served the Lord many different ways throughout her life. Both boys were saved at a young age at Mount Hope Baptist Church. They both went on to serve the Lord in their own ways in their lives and families. Shirley encouraged Drew to teach Sunday school as a young adult which led to him becoming an adult Sunday school teacher, children’s church worker, Sunday School Superintendent and Deacon. Greg went on to be involved in outreach ministry and teaching Bible classes.

Keith and Shirley retired and moved to Inwood, WV, where they attended and served at First Baptist Church of Inwood under Pastor Devin Ward. They enjoyed many activities with their senior group, the golden agers, as well as eating out many different places (which was one of Shirley’s favorite things to do, especially breakfast). She loved playing dominos, except when Keith set to her right and messed her up. After Keith went home to be with the Lord, Shirley moved back to Virginia in Aldie, Herndon, and Ashburn. She attended Temple Baptist Church under Pastor David Pittman.

Shirley is survived by her son Greg Gardner, son and daughter-in-law Drew and Wanda Gardner. Grandchildren: Nathan and Erica Gardner, Joshua and Sarah Gardner, Matthew and Savannah Gardner, and Rebekah Gardner. Great-grandchildren: Tirzah, Judah, Violet, Daniel, Lisa, Jennifer and Jedidiah. Services were held at Colonial Funeral Home on Monday, December 13, 2021.
