This letter is in response to Ms. Skahan's letter to the editor in the Loudoun Times-Mirror on May 10. I am very sorry that you are so misinformed about our president. What laws and especially immigration laws do you believe our president has assaulted? You need to be specific. Do you know the laws?
Congress – your representatives in the House and the Senate – has the constitutional authority and duty to make laws. Any laws broken are handled by the judicial branch of the government, and the president heads the executive branch. If you have a problem with the law, talk to your “do nothing” Congress. Don’t blame the President.
I doubt very much that the president thinks the poor folks coming to our country are doing so “willy nilly.” I think he knows that this mass migration of people illegally crossing our border is highly organized. As long as Congress does nothing to reform our broken immigration laws, there will be chaos at the borders. We are not set up for the masses of people who are crossing the border every day. Congress can fix this by setting up a humane and secure system for immigration but they are refusing to do so for political reasons. This is unfair and dangerous to Americans and immigrants!
Do you really believe that our president thinks “abject force and cruel and unusual punishment” will solve our immigration problem? What makes you think that? He has consistently asked Congress to work on immigration reform and his administration put forth a “Keep the Family Together and Enforce the Law Act,” which Congress has not acted on. Because the president does care, he issued an executive order to detain the children and parents together. He is not lawless. The people flooding our border are lawless!
What makes you think that anyone is denied due process? All are given due process, but there are thousands and thousands and it takes time, money and people. The president has allocated funds to provide for these processes. He has done much more than Congress has to end the lawlessness.
