Growing up as a Muslim woman in post-9/11 America, I’m all too familiar with the kind of Islamophobia that plagues this country and the rest of the Western world. With the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan this past week, Muslims all over the world must prepare to face a new resurgence of Islamophobia and discrimination. State your religion or nationality, and you’re immediately seen as a “potential threat”. We’ve already seen the effects of such prejudice, such as the Muslim Ban in 2018, and now today, as European countries refuse to accept innocent Afghan refugees.
When it comes to saving Afghan refugees, many international leaders refuse to open their borders to such high numbers of what they see as “potential threats”. The Previous Prime Minister of Italy, Matteo Salvani said himself, “Open doors for thousands of men, including potential terrorists, absolutely not.” Americans must fight to oppose this dangerous and racist ideology here at home. We must accept a wider number of Afghan refugees, many of whom risked their lives to aid our country, and expand their access to the U.S. resettlement program. We can’t continue to let racism fuel our global or national politics, especially not when millions of lives are at risk. Contact the Biden Administration and your local representatives today at https://borgenproject.org/action-center/ to demand the U.S. government uphold its promise in protecting the Afghan people.
