As a tax-paying citizen of Loudoun County, I want to express my total dismay and disgust with county Treasurer Roger Zurn's (R) posting on Facebook. As a Black citizen of the county, I need to remind you of a few things: We, the citizens of Loudoun County, pay your salary. So as your employer I do not condone or support your disrespectful comments towards the Black citizens of this county.
Under no circumstances would any private business or government employers allow this type of behavior. You would have been fired! You are a public elected official. You are supposed to represent all of the citizens, regardless of race, creed or financial status. You obviously do not take your “oath to serve all citizens” seriously.
Even though you quickly removed the disturbing post and provided a dreary, insincere apology, that is not enough. You really need to educate yourself on the history and background of your racist comments. I suggest you do some required reading to better understand your insensitivity to the Black citizens of Loudoun County.
I will leave you with some food for thought next time you have another “moment of lapse in judgement.” Racism is not measured by how you treat the person of color you know, but by how you treat the ones you don’t. It’s not measured by your affection for a singular Black person but your respect for Black people in general.
