Independence High School players celebrate during a Week 2 home win over Riverside on Sept. 2. Independence is vying with Stone Bridge and Woodgrove for the top spot in the Class 5 Potomac District.

With only three weeks remaining in the 2021 varsity football regular season, several Loudoun teams are in position to claim a district championship.

Four teams are in the mix for supremacy in the Class 4 Dulles District, while three teams are vying for the top spot in the Class 5 Potomac District and the Class 6 Cedar Run District.

Loudoun's two remaining undefeated teams -- Stone Bridge and Independence -- are part of a three-way race with Woodgrove in the Potomac District.

A trio of games -- Stone Bridge at Woodgrove, Woodgrove at Independence and Independence at Stone Bridge -- scheduled for the next three weeks will determine which team claims the Potomac District crown.

The Dulles District features four teams with just one loss. Broad Run, whose only setback came against Stone Bridge in a non-district game, are undefeated in district play, while Heritage, Loudoun County and Tuscarora each have one district loss.

Following a home game against Rock Ridge, Broad Run will close out the regular season with road games against Loudoun County and Tuscarora. The Spartans can secure the district title with wins in each of those games.

Loudoun County will host Heritage in another big game featuring Dulles contenders in the final week of the regular season. Tuscarora, regional champions each of the last two seasons, will play Dominion and Lightridge leading up to its showdown against Broad Run.

John Champe, one of two Loudoun teams in the Cedar Run District along with Freedom, sits one game back of Battlefield and Patriot for the district lead. John Champe concludes the regular season with Cedar Run games against Osbourn, Patriot and Freedom.

The regular season concludes Nov. 5. The postseason starts Nov. 13 and culminates with state championship games in each of the VHSL's six classifications on Dec. 11.
