The Freedom Eagles totaled 146.383 points to secure a first-place finish at the Region 5C gymnastics meet Thursday night at Woodgrove High School in Purcellville.
The 2019 Virginia Class 5 state champion Eagles were led by a trio of gymnasts. Kelly Fangyen, Emily Hyun and Riley Waldrop claimed the top three all-around spots on the podium.
Freedom finished 12.5 points ahead of runner-up Riverside, who outscored host Woodgrove by a mere 0.666 points. Stone Bridge placed fourth as a team, followed by Potomac Falls in fifth place.
Fangyen led Freedom in scoring, placing first in all four events with an overall score of 38.433 to sit atop the all-around standings. Fangyen, a sophomore, scored 9.633 on the vault, 9.483 on bars, 9.650 on the beam and an impressive 9.667 on her floor exercise routine.
Hyun, also a sophomore, shined as she competed in the all-around for the first time. Hyun totaled 36.484 points, highlighted by an exceptionally elegant floor routine performance.
“For her to qualify second in the all-around and head to states is fantastic,” Freedom head coach Laura Wrighte said. “She has been working on a new vault and even though she had been having some trouble with bars, she put it all together tonight, which was wonderful.”
Waldrop, a junior, placed third in the all-around - highlighted by her powerful vault performance. Liliana Gines, Emily Clark and Bre Roeder also produced top six finishes in individual events for Freedom.
“They did a fantastic job," Wrighte said. "I’m very fortunate to have such talented gymnasts."
“We’re so proud of their successes,” added assistant coach Kara Dale. “We’re so lucky to coach this team and watch them be successful and perform so well.”
Angelina Nunno of Riverside placed fourth in the all-around. Olivia Hornung of Potomac Falls finished fifth, followed closely by Woodgrove's Natalie Orfanides in sixth place. Elizabeth Casey of Stone Bridge placed third on the bars and the floor exercise.
As regional champions, Freedom earned a spot in the team portion of the VHSL State Gymnastics Championships. The Eagles will compete in the Class 5 team competition Feb. 21 at Patriot High School in Nokesville.
“We need to get some rest and stay healthy. We have almost two weeks which is wonderful. Although we did a really nice job tonight, we have a lot of potential to perform as well as we did if not even better.”
The top two finishers in the all-around and the top four finishers in each event at the Region 5C meet qualified for the individual portion of the VHSL State Gymnastics Championships, set for Feb. 22 at Patriot High School.
