A furious fourth-quarter rally by Stone Bridge fell short in a 19-14 loss to host Highland Springs on Saturday afternoon in the Virginia Class 5 football semifinals.
Stone Bridge — held scoreless through the first three quarters — scored touchdowns on back-to-back possessions in the fourth quarter to trim a 19-point deficit to 19-14 with a little more than three minutes left in regulation.
After the Bulldogs forced the Springers to punt on the ensuing possession — highlighted by sophomore Jonathan Newton’s open-field tackle on third down — Stone Bridge gained possession at its own 37-yard line with 1:11 left in the fourth quarter.
Stone Bridge senior Mario Suarez connected with senior Zeke Wimbush for a 15-yard completion on first down to advance the ball to the Highland Springs’ 48-yard line.
The Region 5C champion Springers held firm from there. Following a spike on first down to stop the clock, three consecutive Bulldog incompletions led to a turnover on downs.
Highland Springs (14-0) took a knee to run the final seconds off the clock and secure a trip to the state championship game for the sixth time in the last eight seasons.
After defeating Highland Springs in the state playoffs each of the last two seasons en route to winning Class 5 championships, Stone Bridge was denied a chance to play for a third consecutive state crown.
Highland Springs and Stone Bridge have combined to win six of the last seven Class 5 titles. The two teams have met in the state playoffs six times since 2015, with Highland Springs winning four of those games.
The Springers will play Maury in the state final on Dec. 10 at Old Dominion University in Norfolk. Maury defeated Green Run 21-14 in the semifinals.
Wimbush capped both Stone Bridge scoring drives in the fourth quarter with short touchdown runs.
The Region 5D champion Bulldogs (12-2) lost for just the second time in their last 38 games.
