Independence golf region champs

The Independence Tigers golf team shined in their inaugural regional tournament, placing first by a wide margin Wednesday at Greene Hills Club in Stanardsville.

The Independence Tigers shot a four-player total of 286 at Greene Hills Club in Stanardsville on Wednesday to run away with the team championship at the Class 3 Region B golf tournament.

In doing so, the Tigers became the first athletic team at Independence to hoist a regional championship trophy. A first-year school in Ashburn, Independence completed the regional tournament 37 strokes ahead of runner-up William Monroe (323).

Independence sophomore Mehrbaan Singh earned low medalist honors with a 1-under par 70. Sophomores Aryan Vuradi (71) and Julie Shin (72), and junior Jonah Han (73) also delivered stellar rounds for the Tigers.

Coach David Larson will next guide the Tigers in their first state tournament. The Virginia Class 3 state golf tournament is Oct. 15 at Williamsburg National Golf Course.
