LVHS GXC state champs

The Loudoun Valley Vikings won the VHSL Class 4 state girls’ cross-country championship for a third consecutive season April 24 at Oatlands in Leesburg.

Loudoun Valley High School raced to a third consecutive Class 4 girls’ team title April 24 at the Virginia High School League State Cross-Country Championships.

The Vikings totaled just 33 points in the girls’ race, finishing well ahead of runner-up Blacksburg (59 points). Led by champion Ava Gordon (18:49), five Loudoun Valley runners crossed the finish line at the Oatlands course in Leesburg among the top 13 individually.

Scarlet Fetterolf placed fifth for the Vikings, followed by Ricky Fetterolf (ninth), Maddie Smith (12th) and Ally Talley (13th). Eryn Lackey and Cecelia Fetterolf also posted top 25 finishes.

With four runners inside the top 25, Tuscarora finished third in the girls’ standings with 86 points. Michaela Workman paced the Huskies in 11th place.

Loudoun Valley placed third on the boys’ side with 65 points, just four points off the pace of team champion Jefferson Forest. Grafton finished second with 62 points.

Matthew Smith (16:22) of the Vikings crossed the finish line first in the boys’ race to join Gordon as an individual state champion. Dominion’s Amir Aougab placed 12th and Loudoun Valley’s Aidan Soto finished in 15th place.

George Alexander (16:39) of Stone Bridge earned the top individual finish among local runners at the VHSL Class 5 meet, contested April 23 at Oatlands. Freedom’s Mackenzie Keller (19:34) and Kaia Woolfe (20:22) of Stone Bridge both cracked the top 10 in the girls’ race.

Freedom finished fourth in the girls’ team standings and Briar Woods placed fifth in the boys’ standings. Aidan Nathan crossed the finish line in 11th place to pace the Falcons.

Independence runner Charles Blundell shined at the VHSL Class 3 meet April 21 at Green Hill Park in Roanoke. Blundell (16:11) placed third individually to help lead the second-year Tigers to a fourth place team finish.
