Loudoun Valley freshman Katie Clarke pursues the ball during a 2021 game against Heritage. Clarke scored 34 goals and dished 23 assists in her first season of playing varsity field hockey.

As a year-round field hockey player with Metro Hockey Club for the last five years, Katie Clarke is accustomed to playing with and against older players.

That experience served Clarke well in her freshman season on Loudoun Valley High School's field hockey team.

"I feel like years of playing with people who were already high school age helped me to have confidence this year," Clarke said.

Clarke excelled in her first varsity season, setting school records with 34 goals and 23 assists.

"I didn't expect that I would have that many opportunities to score or just play in as many games as I did," Clarke said. "It was a really cool surprise. I thank my coaches for allowing me to have the opportunity as a freshman to step up and play."

An impressive stretch of nine wins in 10 games helped Loudoun Valley finish the 2021 season with a 12-6 record. The Vikings also won a first-round game in the Dulles District tournament.

Clarke, who maintains a 4.3 GPA, was rewarded for her stellar play with multiple postseason accolades. Along with earning first-team All-Dulles District honors, Clarke was selected as the Region 4D Player of the Year.

"Katie excels in the classroom, as well as the field," Loudoun Valley head coach Nancy Adams said. "She is a true leader and a pleasure to coach."

Most recently earning first-team selection on the all-state team, Clarke said "it's an honor" to be recognized for her play and is "excited" for her sophomore season at Loudoun Valley.

Clarke added that she does aspire to play field hockey in college and has just begun the recruiting process.

After first learning about field hockey when she was 7 through two of her neighborhood friends, Clarke has developed into one of the top players in the state.

"I had tried a lot of sports by that time so I also wanted to try field hockey," Clarke said. "And it just stuck."
