Following a nearly 10-month absence of varsity sports in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Loudoun County Public Schools teams made up for lost time in 2021.
Varsity teams from eight Loudoun schools -- Broad Run, Dominion, Freedom, Independence, Loudoun County, Loudoun Valley, Riverside and Stone Bridge -- combined to hoist 23 Virginia High School League state championship trophies during the last 12 months.
The stellar run of championships began in February with Freedom High School winning its fourth consecutive gymnastics crown and concluded in December with Stone Bridge repeating as state football champions.
Stone Bridge football was one of four local teams to win two state titles in the same calendar year -- a rare feat made possible when the 2020 fall sports season was postponed until March of this year.
Independence competition cheer, Loudoun County volleyball and Loudoun Valley girls cross-country also doubled up on state championships in 2021.
Broad Run (baseball, competition cheer), Dominion (boys lacrosse, girls lacrosse, girls soccer), Independence (baseball, golf), Loudoun Valley (boys and girls track and field), Riverside (competition cheer, golf, boys lacrosse) and Stone Bridge (boys basketball, volleyball) also struck state gold in 2021.
