A 21-0 surge to close the first half sparked the Salem Spartans to a 21-14 victory over the Tuscarora Huskies in the Virginia Class 4 state football semifinals April 24 in Salem.

The state semifinal game -- played with continuous rain falling -- was a rematch from the 2019 state semifinals. Tuscarora prevailed 36-20 to earn a spot in the 2019 state final.

Salem (9-0) avenged that loss to advance to this year's Virginia Class 4 state championship game May 1 against Lake Taylor.

Tuscarora junior Bryce Duke rushed for a pair of touchdowns -- one in each half. The Region 4C champion Huskies conclude the season at 7-1.
