Heritage High School's gymnastics team selected a perfect time to produce a program-record score. The Pride posted a score of 145.3 at the Region 1-4C gymnastics meet Monday night to edge runner-up Loudoun Valley by a little more than a point for the top spot.

Heritage, the tournament's host school, qualified for the VHSL State Gymnastics Championships team competition by placing first at regionals. The Pride topped their previous mark of 143.425, set earlier this season, by nearly two points.

Heritage coach Jenny Aubel praised her roster -- referencing Caitlyn Nash, Taylor Hunter and Riley Carroll for producing season-best scores in the all-around -- while thanking staff, students and parents for their support in hosting the event.

Pride freshman Julia Welch placed first in three of four events on her way to topping the podium with an overall score of 37.5 in the all-around. Welch posted first-place scores of 9.775 on vault, 9.475 on floor exercise and 9.075 on the uneven bars.

Freshman Joanna Welsh, Julia's twin sister, also provided a big boost to the Pride's team success though her scores did not count toward the individual competition. Joanna Welch scored 9.45 or more in all four events.

Dulles District meet champions Loudoun Valley secured four of the top six spots in the all-around. Jenna Haran placed first on the balance beam (9.6) and finished second in the all-around.

Valley's Ashley Bannerton finished second on the vault and the balance beam to earn a third-place finish in the all-around. Broadway's Ashley Gill and Valley's Carly Snder and Grace Hawk held spots four through six in the all-around.

Along with Heritage qualifying as a team, the top two finishers in the all-around and the top four finishers in each event advance to the VHSL State Gymnastics Championships individual competition.

The state meet is Feb. 21-22 at Patriot High School in Nokesville.
