Seven teams from Loudoun County Public Schools are off to flying starts in the 2021 varsity football season. Four Dulles District teams and three Potomac District teams have combined to go 19-0 through the season’s first three weeks.
Broad Run, Heritage and Tuscarora from the Class 4 Dulles District are each 3-0, as are Independence and Stone Bridge from the Class 5 Potomac District. Loudoun County (Dulles) and Woodgrove (Potomac) are each off to 2-0 starts.
Overall, 10 of Loudoun’s 17 varsity teams have winning records. Freedom (Class 6 Cedar Run District), Lightridge (Dulles) and Potomac Falls (Potomac) have each won two of their first three games.
Broad Run has been the stingiest of the seven undefeated teams. The Spartans have posted two shutouts and have outscored their three opponents by a combined total of 125-6.
Heritage has won two of its three games by five points or less. After narrow victories over Kettle Run and Freedom, the Pride rolled past Rock Ridge in Week 3.
Independence — a regional champion at the Class 3 level last season before moving to Class 5 due to the school’s growing student population — have totaled 91 points in its last two games after receiving a forfeit victory in Week 1.
Loudoun County, who opened the season a week later than most teams, have been dominant in both of its wins. The Captains outscored Millbrook and Potomac Falls by a combined total of 98-26.
Reigning Class 5 state champion Stone Bridge has overcome a challenging schedule to start 3-0. After allowing just seven total points in their first two wins, the Bulldogs outlasted a strong Freedom-Woodbridge team 38-35 in Week 3.
Tuscarora — regional champions each of the previous two seasons — won its first two games in decisive fashion before surviving a test from John Champe in Week 3. The Huskies have scored 115 points while allowing 35 through three games.
Woodgrove won each of its first two games by three points — defeating Champe 27-24 at home and rallying to defeat host Forest Park 50-47. The Wolverines were scheduled to host Potomac in Week 3, but the game was postponed. A make-up date has not been determined.
