Independence sophomore Julie Shin points to her winning score after shooting 6-under par 64 at the 2019 Virginia High School League Girls Open Championship.

Sophomore Julie Shin put an exclamation point on a tremendous first season for the Independence High School golf team at the 2019 Virginia High School League Girls Open Championship.

Shin shot 6-under par 64 at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg to earn medalist honors among a field of 69 golfers. Shin carded five birdies on the back nine on her way to setting a female course record at Heritage Oaks.

Prior to Shin's individual state title, Independence became the first athletic team in the school's brief history to win regional and state championships. The Tigers paced the field by 13 strokes at the state competition and by 37 strokes at the regional tournament.

Sydney Hackett of Rock Ridge finished three shots back of Shin at the VHSL Girls Open in second place with a 3-under par 67. Shelly Bajpai (71) of Freedom tied for sixth place.

Broad Run's Hannah Jonely (74) finished 12th in the 69-golfer field and Ali Raedel (77) of John Champe tied for 19th place.
