The Virginia High School League Executive Committee will vote July 27 on which one of three models to follow in the reopening of sports for the 2020-2021 school year.
Model 2 (switch fall and spring sports seasons) has changed since the executive committee discussed the models during a July 15 special session. The NCAA has updated its Resocialization of Collegiate Sport: Developing Standards for Practice and Competition manual and has reclassified soccer as a high contact risk sport.
The update places soccer in the same high contact risk classification with basketball, cheer, field hockey, football, lacrosse, volleyball and wrestling.
"This update changes the concept of Model 2 drastically. One of the pros for Model 2 was the fact that it offered the opportunity to get more student-athletes back on the field this fall," VHSL Executive Director Dr. John W. “Billy” Haun said in a prepared statement. "Now, both soccer and lacrosse would not be played due to being classified as high contact risk sports, which would eliminate approximately 28,000 student-athletes."
In Model 1 (leave all sports in current season), only two sports -- cross country and golf -- would be allowed to play this fall. Football, volleyball, field hockey and competition cheer would not be eligible for competition.
Model 3 (delay all VHSL sports and adopt the Condensed Interscholastic Plan) is the only model that allows all sports to be played this school year. With the condensed schedule, teams would play approximately 60% of a regular season schedule and there would be some overlap in seasons.
Here is a look at the three models:
-Leave all sports in current season.
-Low and moderate contact risks sports that would be allowed to play in the fall: cross country and golf.
-High risk sports that would not be played in the fall: cheer, field hockey, football and volleyball.
-Switch fall and spring sports seasons.
-Low and moderate contact risk sports that would be allowed to play in the fall: baseball, softball, tennis and track and field.
-High risk sport that would not be played in the fall: lacrosse and soccer.
