The Loudoun Valley Vikings raced to a boys' team title at the Virginia High School League Cross-Country Championships for a fifth consecutive year Saturday at Great Meadow in The Plains.

With five runners placing among the top seven overall, the Vikings finished with a team total of just 17 points. Grafton placed second with 86 points.

Valley's Carlos Shultz (15:24) crossed the finish line first, followed by teammates Kellen Hasle (15:40), Jeremiah Mussmon (15:49) and Taylor Ney (15:49) in second through fourth.

Kevin Carlson (16:06) was the fifth Viking to cross the finish line in seventh place. Matthew Smith (16:07) earned Valley's sixth top 10 individual finish in eighth place.

The Vikings made it two team titles in one day by also winning the girls' state championship. Valley placed first in the team standings with 36 points, 23 points better than runner-up Blacksburg (59).

Ava Gordon (18:04) of the Vikings placed first individually. Loudoun runners claimed the top three spots with Valley's Ricky Fetterolf (18:10) placing second and Broad Run's Ellie Desmond (18:21) finishing third.

Valley's Elise Abbe (18:31) finished in seventh place, while teammates Scarlet Fetterolf (19:09) and Ally Talley (19:18) placed inside the top 20.

The team championship is the second straight for Valley's girls, who placed second in the state four consecutive years from 2014 through 2017.

Individually, a pair of Heritage runners Jenny Schilling (19:00) and Ryan Pendergast (16:18) cracked the top 15 in their respective races.

Graham paces Class 6 field

Senior Bethany Graham of the John Champe Knights was the class of the Class 6 girls' field at the VHSL State Cross-Country Championships.

Graham completed the Great Meadow course in 17:42, 34 seconds ahead of runner-up Aniya Mosley of Ocean Lakes. Graham's individual title helped lead the Knights to a runner-up team finish.

Champe finished with 97 points, eight more than team champion Lake Braddock (89). Marianne Jayaraj (19:08) placed 14th and Taylor Gibson (19:22) finished 17th for the Knights.

Kyle Lauffenberger (16:32) finished 22nd in the boys' race to pace Champe, who placed eighth in the team standings.

Eagles, Bulldogs shine in Class 5

The Freedom Eagles and the Stone Bridge Bulldogs both produced top five boys' and girls' team finishes in the Class 5 races. Freedom placed third in boys and fourth in girls, while Stone Bridge was fifth in both.

Tristan Brodie (15:27) of Stone Bridge crossed the finish line third in the boys' race. Freedom's Daniel Gittelman (16:02) was fifth, while Aidan Nathan (16:14) of Briar Woods and Clark Smith (16:15) of Freedom also finished inside the top 10.

Freedom's Mackenzie Keller (19:24) placed eigth in the girls' race. Rock Ridge runner Taylor Semon (19:30) finished 12th and Madison Garber (19:30) of Freedom placed 14th.
