After claiming back-to-back Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division III state girls’ basketball championships, Virginia Academy moved up to the Division II level prior to the 2022-2023 season.
Ashburn-based Virginia Academy proved up to the challenge. The Patriots returned to the state final and defeated Miller School 46-35 in the 2023 VISAA Division II championship game.
Following a stellar regular season that earned Virginia Academy the No. 1 seed for the state playoffs, the Patriots reeled off three wins in four days to hoist a state championship trophy for a third consecutive season.
With a roster consisting of Alexandra Ashton, Elyse Autrey, Elena Bertrand, Chase Dillon, Sydney Moore, Sarah Oduro, Kristina Rakotobe, Caiyiah Smith, Sajol Thornhill, Evie Tounger, Kerrigan Westbay, Riley White and Joimarie Williams, Virginia Academy outscored its three state tournament opponents by a combined total of 189-107.
“It has been a blessing to carry out a vision ... and for the results to show that the vision we had for this program was able to be realized and executed,” said head coach Walter Hamilton, who started Virginia Academy’s varsity girls’ basketball program in 2020.
