Postponed from its normal first Saturday in May date, the 95th Virginia Gold Cup is now scheduled for June 27 at Great Meadow near The Plains.

Snapping a long-standing tradition, the 95th running of the Virginia Gold Cup did not take place on the first Saturday in May this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Virginia Gold Cup organizers announced Tuesday that the annual steeplechase event has been rescheduled for June 27 and will be held without spectators. To remain aligned with social distancing measures, only participants and essential personnel will be allowed on the grounds at Great Meadow near The Plains.

"We’ve worked closely with the National Steeplechase Association and Virginia Equine Alliance to find a way to run the Virginia Gold Cup that follows the current restrictions, but helps support the struggling horse industry in Virginia," Virginia Gold Cup Association chairman Dr. William Allison said in a prepared statement.

"It will be a bittersweet day without our loyal fans in attendance, but ultimately being able to host race day is a victory for us," Allison continued. "We are hopeful racegoers will tune into the livestream."

A free livestream will be available at -- starting at 12:30 p.m. For more details, visit

Please tell me this is a joke. The Gold Cup without drunken yuppies and up-and-comers is like an AMC theater playing a movie without an audience, or a child taking its first steps without a parent in the room, or me passing gas without anyone to smell it. In the end it happened but who cares.
